A technical SEO checklist: what a site must get right before content matters

The technical basics that let search engines and AI crawlers find, read and trust a site: crawling, indexing, speed, structure, structured data and mobile.

Good content on a site that crawlers cannot read ranks nowhere. Technical SEO is the plumbing: it makes sure every page can be found, read, understood and loaded quickly. It is not glamorous and most of it is done once.

Work through this list before spending on content or links.

01Can crawlers get in?

  • A robots file that allows the pages you want found, and names the sitemap.
  • A sitemap listing every page you want indexed, and no others.
  • No important page hidden behind a login, a form or a script that must run first.
  • Every page reachable by a plain link from another page.

02Is each page indexable and unique?

  • One address per page. Each page declares its own canonical address.
  • A unique title and description on every page.
  • One main heading that says what the page is about.
  • No two pages competing for the same question.
  • Old addresses redirect permanently to their replacements.

03Is it fast and stable?

Google measures three things it calls Core Web Vitals: how soon the main content appears, how quickly the page responds when touched, and whether the layout jumps while loading. Compress images, load only the code a page needs and reserve space for anything that loads late.

04Does it work on a phone?

  • The mobile page has the same content as the desktop page.
  • Text is readable without zooming, and buttons are far enough apart to tap.
  • Nothing forces sideways scrolling.

05Can a machine tell what the page is?

  • Structured data that names the organisation, its services and the people behind it.
  • Article markup with author and dates on articles.
  • Breadcrumbs that show where a page sits.
  • Images with descriptions.
  • Text in the page itself, not only inside images or video.

The same structure that helps a search engine helps an AI assistant decide what your page says and whether to cite it.

06Is it secure and looked after?

  • Every page served over HTTPS.
  • No broken links, inside the site or out.
  • A useful not-found page.
  • Search consoles set up and checked, so problems are seen when they start.

In short

  • Technical SEO makes sure pages can be found, read, understood and loaded quickly.
  • One address, one title and one main heading per page; redirects for everything that moved.
  • Speed, stability and a complete mobile page are measured and count.
  • Structured data tells search engines and AI assistants what a page is.

Questions

Is technical SEO a one-off job?

Mostly. The foundations are set once. After that it needs a check whenever the site changes, and a regular look at the search consoles.

Does site speed really affect ranking?

It is one signal among many. It affects visitors more directly: slow pages lose people before they read a word.

Do we need structured data?

It is not required to rank, and it makes the page easier for machines to interpret, which matters more each year as AI assistants answer questions directly.

Does Quantum Beetle do this?

Yes, as part of every website we build and as SEO and GEO work on existing sites.
