Advertising platforms are very good at spending whatever budget they are given. Whether that spending produces customers depends on a handful of things that are set up before the first advert runs.
Most wasted budgets are lost in the same seven places.
01The seven leaks
- The wrong goal. Optimising for clicks buys clicks. Optimise for the action you want: an enquiry, a booking, a sale.
- No tracking. If you cannot see which advert led to which enquiry, every decision afterwards is a guess.
- Targeting too wide. Showing an advert to everyone means paying to reach people who will never buy.
- No exclusions. Without them you pay for searches that share a word with yours and nothing else.
- A weak landing page. The advert promises one thing and the page talks about another.
- One advert, never tested. The first version is rarely the best.
- Set and forgotten. Costs drift, competitors change, and nobody looks.
02Set up before spending anything
- Decide the one action that counts as success, and what it is worth to you.
- Install tracking and test it by completing the action yourself.
- Build a page for the advert: one message, one action, fast on a phone.
- Write several versions of the advert.
- Start with a small budget and a narrow audience.
03What to look at each week
- Cost for each result, not cost for each click
- Which adverts and audiences produced results, and which only spent
- The searches that actually triggered your adverts
- Whether the leads were any good, according to whoever followed them up
Move money from what does not work to what does, every week. That one habit is most of the job.
04Where AI helps, and where it does not
Software is good at watching many adverts at once, spotting which are fading and suggesting where to move budget. It is good at producing variations to test. It is not a substitute for knowing your customer, your offer and what a good lead looks like. Decisions about the message and the money should stay with people.
05When advertising is the wrong tool
- The offer is unclear. Advertising amplifies what is there, including confusion.
- The site cannot convert a visitor. Fix that first.
- Nobody will follow up enquiries quickly.
- The margin cannot carry the cost of winning a customer.
In short
- Budgets leak through the wrong goal, missing tracking, wide targeting and weak landing pages.
- Decide the action that counts, track it and build a page for it before spending.
- Judge by cost for each real result and by lead quality.
- Move money toward what works every week.
Questions
How much should we spend on ads?
Start small enough that being wrong is cheap and large enough to learn from within a few weeks. Raise it only for what has shown a result.
How soon will we see results?
Adverts can bring visits the same day. Knowing which ones bring customers takes a few weeks of data.
Which platform should we use?
The one your customers use when they are looking for what you sell. Search adverts catch people who are already looking; social adverts reach people who are not yet.
Does Quantum Beetle run campaigns?
Yes: paid campaigns planned, run and adjusted against the results that matter to you, with the decisions staying with you and our team.
Sounds like your problem?
Tell us about it. We'll say honestly whether the swarm can help, and what it would take.
