How an AI-assisted film gets made, from brief to final cut

The stages of making a film with AI in the process: brief, direction, storyboard, generation and shooting, edit, sound and finishing, and where people decide.

A film made with AI is not a film made by pressing a button. The tools change what is quick and what is possible. They do not change the order of the work or the number of decisions in it. Someone still has to decide what the film is for, what it looks like and whether each shot is good enough.

This is the order the work follows.

011. Brief

Who is watching, the one thing they should remember, where the film will play and what must appear in it. Everything later is judged against this page.

022. Direction

Two or three ways the film could look and feel, shown as images and short moving tests. This is where AI helps most: directions that used to be described in words can be seen. You choose one.

033. Script and storyboard

The words, and the film drawn shot by shot. Approve this carefully. Changing a line here costs minutes; changing it after the edit costs days.

044. Making the pictures

  • Generated footage for settings, movement and scenes that would be costly to shoot.
  • CGI for anything that must match a real product exactly.
  • Filmed footage where a real person or a real place is the point.
  • Most films mix all three. The skill is in choosing which shot needs which.

055. Edit

Shots are chosen, ordered and timed. Many generated shots are made for each one that is kept. Pace, rhythm and what to leave out are an editor's decisions and are most of what makes a film feel finished.

066. Sound

Voice, music, effects and the room itself. Sound is half of how a film is felt, and it is where a rushed film gives itself away. It is mixed last, to the final picture.

077. Finishing and versions

  • Colour made consistent across shots from different sources.
  • Small faults removed frame by frame.
  • Titles and graphics set.
  • Each version made: wide, vertical, short, and each language.

AI makes the early stages faster and the options wider. The finishing is done by people, and it is what separates a film from a collection of clips.

In short

  • The order of work is unchanged: brief, direction, storyboard, pictures, edit, sound, finish.
  • AI makes directions visible early and makes costly scenes affordable.
  • Generated footage, CGI and filming each have shots they suit best.
  • Editing, sound and finishing are human decisions and decide the quality.

Questions

Is an AI-assisted film cheaper?

Often for scenes that would otherwise need locations, sets or long shoots. The saving is in production. Thinking, editing and finishing cost what they always did.

Can you tell a film was made with AI?

A careless one, yes. A finished one, usually not, because the tell-tale faults are removed in the edit and the finishing.

What can AI not do yet?

Keep a product pixel-accurate through a long shot, hold one character perfectly consistent over a long story, and replace a real person where authenticity is the point.

How does Quantum Beetle work?

AI-first and finished by people: video, CGI, imagery and sound from one production house, with a direction you approve before production starts.
